Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 8:36PM Think you have a busy schedule? This exec has what anyone would call a very full day!
All of us feel sorry for ourselves on days we think we've got too much to do and too little time to do it in. Some of us put the plans for our work days in the hands of others to schedule activities for us--to keep us organized and on-task...and boy does it seem brutal.
Just in case you to thought your schedule was unreasonable from time-to-time, I ran across a page from the personal calendar of the typical day--what his staff calls a "pretty generic day"--for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen. An executive who says his ambition is to safe-guard a world in which economics and the security are intertwined--a pretty worthy business goal I'd say.
Mullen's day starts early and ends very late.
His day starts before 430, when he departs for a work-out in the gym. Time is slated to include such ordinary things as spending time reading specific reports [e.g., the President Daily Brief], haircuts, changing clothes, etc.
The day starts in his Washington, D.C. residence, takes him to the Pentagon [obviously], back to the District [George Washington University], Virginia [Andrews Air Force Base], New York City, back to Virginia, then back to the District where he started. It ends at 0000 [midnight], 20 hours after rising.
Think you could do this very many days in a row?
To put your own frustration--and daily schedule--in perspective, I'd encourage you to check out the detailed, minute-by-minute page ripped from his personal schedule--with explanations--in the current issue of FastCompany, May 2010. Only after I forget this page from the schedule of Mullen's "pretty generic day" will I be impressed by others' crowded days--or feel sorry for myself when I think my daily table is demanding!
