Friday, April 2, 2010 at 4:16PM You can be taken for a celebrity--if you arrange for it!
It's an age of fascination with people with papparazzi.
Ever wondered how it feels to be in the spotlight? Well, you need wonder no longer--if you're willing to fork over the dough; indeed, the experience can be yours for an entire day! It' more predictable than being on Who wants to be a millionare? More more real than Who wants to be a superhero? Less humiliating than being a contestant on Queen for a day--the 1960s television show that had four women, each day with a sob story, vying to become treated royally.
Recently, Forbes' Quentin Hardy got to see what it's like to be a pretend celebrity. While I share the clip mostly for fun--it points to a couple of interesting realities in the culture we calls ours:
[1] What a fun way to make a living for those who want to re-invent themselves as papparazzi-for-hire!
[2] If you have money to blow and want to get a little [albeit superficial] publicity going--this is exactly the way that job gets accomplished!
[3] What's particular interesting to me as a student of pop culture: how total strangers are intrigued by the glitz of it all--to the point of asking for autographs and wanting to pose with someone who's apparently famous, important, or a celeb--but otherwise unrecognizable to them.
What a country--anyway you look at it! Here's the video clip--decide for yourself!
