Friday, February 26, 2010 at 10:38AM Someone's looking out for you: The website that wants to protect you.
Just when you thought it was safe to leave the house.
Yesterday I wrote about the possibility that some people are more "connected" than they ought to be--in effect, over-sharing personal information when less might be better [see Could Blippy be social network over-sharing?]. Well, as chance would have it, a new entity appeared as recently as last week with the single-minded purpose of warning social-networkers of the danger of disclosing too much information regarding their whereabouts on personal sites like Facebook and Twitter.
To challenge the clear trend for some people to self-disclose virtually all manner of information about themselves, including where they are off-to [and, thus, signalling where and when they're away from "home"], a set of internet geeks or angels--depending on your POV--launched a service to the public called pleaserobme.com.
Here's an AP "story" on the site:
Clearly, how much a person discloses to others is a matter of personal preference and choice. In general, my sense is that in terms of social networking, personal information is shared disproportionately to the age of the sharer. Why this is true could be explained in a variety of ways: The need to share likely diminishes over time, naivete of some is cured by life experience, and, clearly the lessons in over-sharing are learned by some the hard way: failed relationships, aborted job-offers, and the like.
Now, it seems, there's the people at pleaserobme.com trying to teach a lesson for all about what's to be considered in disclosing exactly where in the world you are--especially if your your "castle" back where you are highly identified with [again, attributable to the gee-wiz world of technology] is vulnerable to others who take social disclosure as an opportunity to do evil.
Like I said yesterday, maybe Mom had it figured out 'way back when...certainly more than we gave her credit for!
