OnBiz QUIZ: Is there promise--even profit--in unattractive businesses?

Why the question?
Today there is a great deal of hype about being No. 1 and being the most recognized brand, having the most market share—all as avenues to success and profit.  But not everyone can be No. 1--only one firm can have superior market share--so it makes sense to raise the question “Is there financial and commercial success in what you might call the mediocre or unattractive?"

Where you can get the answer!
As it turns out there’s more than ample opportunity to do well, to be very successful, and to be pre-eminent in the field of business by focusing on businesses that no one else is paying attention to.  In a recent issue of FORTUNE [Nov23, 2009], on the page devoted to “The best advice I ever got,” Wilbur Ross tells what his tips are for doing exactly that.  An HBS graduate, he has built an empire by buying companies that no one else wants—precisely because they are not all that attractive.

Check out his advice about such things as asking the right questions, setting a walking-away price, betting on a recovery, keeping your cool, and how much to prepare for a take-over attempt!  It'll take you five minutes and maybe make you a fortune!

“Good execution beats a bad idea,” by Wilbur Ross, FORTUNE, November 23, 2009.

What’s behind the BIZ QUIZ?
The BIZ QUIZ is different from an ordinary “blog”—it’s less about my opinion and more about what I’ve found that I think you might find both interesting and informative.  The BIZ QUIZ is posted every now and then so I can share an especially interesting article I’ve come across or book I’m reading—all easy to “get,” interesting, readily understandable, and mostly about commerce and business in all of its wonderful and splendid variations.  This is done with the explicit purpose of making the affairs of business more relevant and interesting to readers of keithmurrayONBIZ—and, in the process, making my readers like you more conversant and knowledgeable about business matters—which ought to matter to everyone!
