OnBiz QUIZ: Do CEOs really make a big difference in a company?

Why the question?
A friend and colleague of mine, Michael Roberto, and author of two popular books on executive decision making, beginning on Oct 5, 2009, has posted several blogs [find Michael Roberto's blog here] on the composition, age and experience level of GM’s board of directors.  In his comments he’s raised the issue as to whether the right individuals and the right kind of people are in positions to make a difference for this troubled firm.  Clearly, it’s a valid question that potentially applies to more than just General Motors:  What’s the relationship between the leader and the performance of a company?

The answer to impress others how ON BIZ smart you are.
I recently ran across a short-but-terrific feature article by The Wall Street Journal’s Jason Zweig that speaks to exactly this issue--and may surprise you.  From what he writes, a CEO's contribution” to organizational outcomes may not be all that much!  I urge you to read it to see what you think.  It’ll only take you five minutes to read—but may influence your ideas about CEOs!

What’s behind the BIZ QUIZ?
The BIZ QUIZ is different from an ordinary “blog”—it’s less about my opinion and more about what I’ve found that I think you might find both interesting and informative.  The BIZ QUIZ is posted every now and then so I can share an especially interesting article I’ve come across or book I’m reading—all easy to “get,” interesting, readily understandable, and mostly about commerce and business in all of its wonderful and splendid variations.  This is done with the explicit purpose of making the affairs of business more relevant and interesting to readers of keithmurrayONBIZ—and, in the process, making my readers like you more conversant and knowledgeable about business matters—which ought to matter to everyone!
